New Year Eve at Magenta & Silhouette, Kuching

04.01.2009 UPDATE:
I played BINGO over the phone with Amiey tonight. Really. No joke! Thanks to Digi’s FREE Calls for making this possible.

Remember I said I had no idea what to do for New Year’s eve?  Well, despite the pretty awesome suggestions by some, including One Other‘s romantic beach suggestion, I choose to spend new year’s eve the way I initially planned it.  Don’t get me wrong, I actually did have a plan, but well, I was unsure about it ’till the very last moment that is.

So the plan was simple.  Dinner, and new year’s countdown.  The main problem was PLACE.  Yeah… Kuching is kind of deserted this new year.  No mega parties organised by the state government to usher the new year.  It really makes me feel like I wanna be in KL, but yeah.. Kuching is still a great place to party if you know where and when.

Finally, Magenta it is.  A few friends, and internet reviews recommended this place as being superbly perfect for a romantic dinner, with a touch of up-scale dining.  Arrived with Amiey at Magenta at 845pm, and had difficulty finding a place to park.  The place was surprisingly a little full despite dinner time being over.  There were a few groups of friends here and there, and I thought “There goes the romantic accense“, as some of the groups were kind of ‘loud’. (Photo above: Magenta’s logo at Jalan Nenas)

The food was kind of yummy, but I was dissapointed with the range of beverages they had.  I was expecting some nice liquor to be available, but yeah… the best they had was beer.  I’d give a two thumbs up for the service, decor and food, but a no thumbs for the whopping service tax which was 10%!! (and yet I complain about KFC and McD charging me 5%). (Photo above: Magenta’looks really nice, but I wouldn’t say its romantic)

Dinner was done, and I figured, a good bar would be just nice to countdown the new year.  Was thinking SOHO, Grappa’s, MOJO and BarZing!, but finally decided that Silhouette was the place to usher the new year.  It’s new, and I was sure that they have something special going on.  Well, my instincts were right as they had the New Years Party on, with free flow of beer and cocktails.  It was a little pricey as they charged RM50 per entry, but I thought.. “New Year lah… once a year only…” and so, Amiey and I went in to join in the crowd. (Photo above (taken at Magenta): Amiey looked gorgeous in her black dress)

The place was crowded, but well, we enjoyed moving to the music.  I also enjoyed watching the crowd ‘shake it… shake it…‘ with a huge cup of Heineken in my grip.  I’m not a huge fan of beer as I prefer expensive liquor, but surprisingly, the beer taste really decent.  Maybe it’s the atmosphere :P  Frankly speaking, I should have gone for the cocktails, but yeah.. with the loud music banging around, it’s kind of hard getting your order through, so it’s better to keep it simple. (Photo above: Free flow of beer!!)

Silhouette is actually really decent for a bar, and the New Year’s party was okay.  The only thing I just couldn’t figure out was, why the hell were showing Mr Bean on the TV screen when people were busy counting down to the new year?  Weird, but yeah.. that’s what happened. (Photo above: Shake it.. Shake it…)

Anyway, unexpectedly bumped into Norman, and two of my old schoolmates, Brian and Carlos.  Norman was pretty busy taking photos (which I do expect him to donate to me :P ), and with the music and all the stuff going on, it was hard to communicate. (Photo above: Your’s truly with Miss Amiey)

Left the party midway as Amiey was not feeling well, but I am satisfied that I’ve manage to celebrate this new year outside home, and as I have planned, although I have to admit the count down at the bar could have been a little better.

To all.. Happy New Year…
